Why United Airlines Picked The Boeing 737 MAX 8 Over A Widebody For Its Shortest Transatlantic Route

Terceira is not just another dot on United Airlines’ 2027 route map. The island in the Azores represents the clearest example yet of how far the airline believes a modern narrowbody can stretch across the Atlantic, because the carrier’s new service from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) will be operated by the Boeing 737 MAX 8 rather than a widebody or the increasingly important Airbus A321XLR. With flights scheduled three times per week from June 9 through September 5, 2027, the route will also become United’s shortest European service by both distance and scheduled flying time.
