A freight wagon derailment at a nearby station has made the Port of Rijeka inaccessible via rail. The situation occurred at around 17:20 on 2 September and the disruption was said to last for 48 hours.
The freight train derailed near the Sušak Pećine station. Three wagons were detached from the tracks. Fortunately, no one was injured.
The incident has a serious impact on freight traffic in the region, however. Operator METRANS reported that restoration works were expected to take 48 hours. During that time, the area will not be accessible.
As a result of the derailment, the third track at the site sustained damage, reports Burin.hr referring to the Croatian Train Operators Union. Three or four switches were damaged as well.
Currently, rail traffic to Port of Rijeka is suspended. “The incident will affect our services to and from the Port of Rijeka”, commented METRANS, “and delays to trains as well as extended transit times for shipments should be expected.”
