Serbia allocated €45.5 million for the reconstruction and expansion of the Port of Prahovo, located on the Danube river. Within the project, the port’s railway infrastructure would be modernised as well.
The ongoing €45.5 million reconstruction project is intended to increase the port’s annual handling capacity to around 3.2 million tonnes, compared to the current 1.4 million tonnes.
New siding and new berth
The port of Prahovo has rail tracks for a total length of about 971 metres, sufficient to accommodate around 160 wagons simultaneously. Most of the rail connections between the main network and the port are single track and non-electrified sections. With the new project, the industrial railway siding will also be upgraded.The modernisation of the port also includes an eighth berth with a vertical quay wall, enabling vessels to dock even during periods of low water levels, including ships more than 100 m long.
‘Green terminal’
Serbian Transport Minister Aleksandra Sofronijević highlighted the construction of a ‘green terminal’ within the port of Prahovo. This facility be dedicated to the reception and temporary storage of hazardous and non-hazardous waste from vessels.
Equipped with pumping and storage facilities for bilge water, waste oils and other liquid residues, as well as separate covered areas for solid waste, it is intended to provide ships navigating the Danube with an environmentally controlled waste-disposal facility.
