A historic first for the Turkish rolling stock manufacturing industry: locomotive producer TÜRASAŞ received a EU TSI-certification for one of its electric locomotives. It is the first case of a Turkish electric locomotive officially meeting EU standards. The European market is now open to the engine.
The TSI certification of the E5000 locomotive is seen as a major milestone for the Turkish rail industry. This is evidenced by the certification handover ceremony, which took place in the presence of Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu at the ministry in Ankara.
“Our locomotive has obtained TSI certification, which is a European Union certification; now, thanks to this, we have the opportunity to sell it to both the European Union and the whole world. In other words, we have documented that a domestically produced locomotive can be manufactured to world standards”, Uraloğlu commented at the event.
There are currently 30 E5000 locomotives in existence, which are produced at TÜRASAŞ’ facilities in Sivas, Eskişehir, and Sakarya. The manufacturer reportedly plans to build a total of 95 E5000 locomotives.
The E5000 locomotive is suitable for both passenger and freight transport on standard gauge infrastructure, according to TÜRASAŞ. It boasts a power output of 5000 kW and a starting tractive force of 300 kN. It can run on ETCS levels 1 and 2.
