V/Line passenger trains catches fire stops near Geelong

A Geelong-bound V/Line train has been evacuated at Corio station after smoke from an oil leak forced the early termination of the 4.09pm Southern Cross service yesterday.

Passengers were urgently removed from the train and the service terminated at Corio.

Passengers interviewed reported a strong acrid smell (toxic) with fumes and smoke filling the passenger carriage. Some passengers reported the issue began much earlier on the journey however the train continued on the journey despite the smoke filling a carriage.

I was on this train and my eyes were watering from the smell of smoke inside the train from around Footscray. When I got off (at Lara) I was gobsmacked that the train was still training with the very obvious thick black smoke coming out of one of the end carriages. (Passenger)

This incident was the second major incident of the day with a track fault causing major issues earlier in the day.

V/Line services have now become so unreliable some are calling for an independent enquiry into the management of the passenger rail operator.

  1. Slave to the system here. I fully sympathise with you guys. Vline has been a nightmare for decades. Stay strong, you will get through this.

  2. Well a please expain sitution for V/Line?

Did the one size fit all train operation concept DOT uses have a part of this?

Those IMU metro urban rail cars were only meant for short to mid distance routes…..did the one size fit all train operation concept push it pass their stress threshold mechically?

As the older classic fleet was designed for long periods continous operations for Vic Regional Rly conditons and requirments.

The option of getting designated fit for purpose fleet for the longer routes to replace the aging N set used operate on of many years was ignored and disregarded.

A investigation on why it happened?

Rule out possible factors contributing to it ie:Track conditons?

Mechical faliure and misuse of the short distance mid distance railcars aka VLocity?

    Who should be held responsible?

They are lucky no one got hurt!
