Major Milestone for Rail Maintenance in Wales
Cairn Cross is proud to announce the successful completion and official opening of the new bogie drop maintenance facility at Canton Maintenance Depot, Cardiff, delivered for Transport for Wales as part of the Core Valley Lines transformation programme.
The milestone was marked by a visit from Welsh Deputy Minister Mark Hooper, who officially opened the facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, recognising the significance of the investment for the future of rail maintenance across Wales.
The state-of-the-art bogie drop facility has been designed to support the maintenance of Transport for Wales’s modern FLIRT fleet, providing critical infrastructure that will help improve reliability, resilience and long-term operational performance across the Welsh rail network.
Delivering a Complex Project in a Live Rail Environment
The project represented a significant engineering and operational challenge for Cairn Cross. Delivered over 18 months, construction took place within a fully operational maintenance depot, requiring careful planning, programme management and stakeholder coordination to ensure rail operations continued uninterrupted throughout the works.
Working closely with Transport for Wales, Network Rail, Pullmans and National Grid Electricity Distribution, the project team successfully navigated the complexities of a live rail environment while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and performance.
The bogie drop facility became fully operational last month and now provides enhanced maintenance capabilities that will support the long-term performance of Transport for Wales’s expanding fleet.
A Project Built on Collaboration
The successful delivery of the facility was underpinned by a collaborative approach between all partners involved in the project. Through proactive stakeholder engagement, detailed planning and adaptive programme delivery, the team was able to overcome challenges and maintain progress while ensuring depot operations remained unaffected.

- 65,000 accident-free hours with zero recorded injuries
- Successful delivery of civil, structural, track, mechanical and electrical, and power infrastructure works

- Programme management recognised by Transport for Wales for its collaborative and controlled approach
