Former CEO of FS sentenced to 5 years in jail for Viareggio rail freight disaster

Mauro Moretti, former CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), was sentenced to five years in jail for the Viareggio disaster that killed 32 people in 2009. A freight train loaded with LPG derailed, causing a leak and an explosion at the station of the Tuscan city.
Moretti’s final sentence comes almost exactly 17 years after the accident, which occurred on the evening of 29 June 2009. In addition to the 32 dead, dozens of people were injured and displaced as a consequence of the explosion.

This latest sentence is the definitive one, coming after a very long legal dispute. It was in fact confirmed by the Corte di Cassazione (the highest court of appeal in the Italian judicial system) after years of appeals and postponements. In addition to Moretti, 11 more people have been sentenced, including other former managers from FS and employees of GATX, which owned the wagons involved in the disaster.
