Why Can’t The Boeing 777-300ER Be Powered By Any Other Engine Type?

While some first-generation variants of the Boeing 777 family were optionally powered by the General Electric GE90 engines, Rolls-Royce Trent 800, and the Pratt & Whitney PW4000-112, subsequent generations were exclusively GE-powered. All three received a comparable number of orders for the first generation of Boeing 777s, with the Trent 800 being the most popular. However, Boeing decided to exclusively power the second-generation Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 777-200LR with the GE90.
