Earlier this month, the news broke that, in a meeting with US President Donald Trump, United Airlines Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby had proposed a ‘mega merger’ between his carrier and fellow US ‘big three’ legacy operatorAmerican Airlines. The reasoning behind Kirby’s radical and ambitious proposal was that consolidation between airlines, especially two of this scale, would help protect the industry against external issues.
