Vital rail freight tunnel in Spain to partially reopen next week

Rail freight between Spain and France has been disrupted since the beginning of 2026 due to multiple closures of the Rubí tunnel. However, things are about to gradually get back to normal, as infrastructure manager Adif announced that the tunnel will reopen to freight trains on the night between Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 April.
Traffic will be carried out on one track. It will be open for 12 hours between Wednesdays and Sundays and for 21 hours on Mondays and Tuesdays, Adif specified. This scheme “will be in effect for at least a month until the ongoing work is completed and traffic can be restored on both tracks”, the infrastructure manager added.

The tunnel has been closed since the end of January due to extreme weather conditions, which required the internal reinforcement of a section. The Rubí tunnel is part of the line connecting Barcelona to France, which usually sees 80 freight trains a week passing through. During the closure, only a maximum of four per day were allowed, all running to or from the La Llagosta terminal.
