Network Rail has issued a safety reminder after a level crossing saw four instances of dangerous misuse in the past two weeks – which could have resulted in serious injury or death.
The recent reports have described youths deliberately putting themselves at risk by playing “chicken” with trains at the Sportsfield footpath crossing, Featherstone.
In another alarming incident, a two year old was allowed to wander onto the railway by their grandparents, placing the child in immediate danger.
The recent trend represents a serious and increasing safety risk, which has led Network Rail to remind all users to:
- Always read instruction signs and check both directions for trains.
- Be alert – avoid distractions like using mobile phones or wearing headphones.
- Cross quickly and carefully – never stop on a crossing.
- Never assume it is safe because a train has just passed. Another could follow soon afterwards.
New risk assessments will be carried out on Sportsfield and neighbouring crossing Halfpenny Lane, which is also prone to misuse.
In addition, Network Rail is stepping up its community and school engagement to reinforce rail safety messages to young people, while also reviewing additional longer-term measures for the crossings.
Darren Robertson-Wilson, Network Rail level crossing manager, said: “My feeling is that we will have a serious injury or worse here very soon if these unsafe behaviours continue.
“Both Sportsfield and Halfpenny Lane level crossings can be used safely – but misuse, trespass or taking risks can have devastating consequences. We’re extremely concerned by the behaviour seen recently and urge everyone to follow the level crossing safety guidelines and to speak to children and young people about the dangers.
“One poor decision can change lives forever.”
