The men approached the North Yorkshire Moors railway in Pickering in a white car – believed to be a VW Tiguan – before scaling a gate and climbing onto a roof.
They then removed £10,000 worth of lead, causing at least £20,000 worth of damage in the process.
The pair later made off towards Scarborough on the A170.
