Almost without exception, commercial aviation took off when each country completely opened its borders and for many, that made 2023 a golden year of sustained demand and a return to profitability. Airlines in Northeast Asia were stuck in lockdowns and partial openings for far longer, and it was not until early to mid-2023 that major markets, such as China, South Korea, and Japan, were finally free of restrictions.
