Elon Musk Questions Bluesky Exemption from Australia’s Under-16 Social Media Ban

Australia’s Online Safety Amendment Act, effective December 10, 2025, requires major platforms like X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and others to verify ages and block under-16 accounts, with fines up to A$49.5 million for non-compliance.

Bluesky escaped the ‘high-risk’ list due to its smaller Australian user base, though it added voluntary age restrictions for new Aussie sign-ups.

Musk highlighted this after a user flagged violent content on Bluesky, sparking criticism of potential political bias toward the left-leaning site and concerns over consistent child safety.
