One of the more fascinating modification programs in aviation history was NASA’s efforts to repurpose two Boeing 747 aircraft to transport its Space Shuttle orbital spacecraft. Given the size of these orbiters, NASA had no hope of using a conventional cargo aircraft or other transportation means, such as via road, to carry them across vast distances.
