On May 27th, 1941, the Royal Navy aircraft carrier launched Swordfish biplanes, disabling the mighty German Bismark battleship and enabling the British battleships to close in for the kill. Subsequent battles at Taranto and later the Pacific War demonstrated the supremacy of the aircraft carrier. Despite continued prophecies of the carrier's demise and vulnerabilities in modern war, they remain a cornerstone of the great nations' ability to project power across the waves. Countries worldwide are developing manned and unmanned aircraft to operate off aircraft carriers designed to enable them to fight the war of tomorrow.
