Samca Group opens new intermodal terminal

Industrial conglomerate Samca Group has opened a new intermodal terminal in Tamarite de Litera, Spain, described as the country’s first facility able to handle dry containers, reefer containers and bulk cargo. With an investment of €24m, the LiteraTIM terminal is expected to remove around 25,000 trucks from the road each year.

The initiative is led by Terminal Intermodal Monzón (TIM), a company formed by Renfe, the ports of Barcelona and Tarragona, and Samca Group. The facility was inaugurated on 29 September and is expected to handle seven trains a day, according to Spanish media.

Tamarite de Litera lies about 200km from the Port of Barcelona, 140km from the Port of Tarragona and 160km from Zaragoza, making it a key logistics hub for the Aragón region. The new terminal covers 18,000sqm and provides storage for 600 containers, including 84 refrigerated units. Samca Group plans to use the site primarily for shipping its agricultural products.

Grupo Samca, based in Aragón, is a privately owned industrial conglomerate with an annual turnover estimated between €1.2 billion and €1.5 billion. It employs around 3,500 people. Originally rooted in mining, the company has since diversified into renewable energy, polymers and fibres, agribusiness, real estate and mineral processing.

In addition to its industrial portfolio, Samca has expanded into logistics, with a focus on intermodality. Alongside the newly inaugurated LiteraTIM terminal, TIM also operates a terminal in Monzón, located just 25km away. Samca Group holds a 75% stake in TIM, while the Port of Barcelona and Renfe each own 10%, and the Port of Tarragona owns the remaining 5%.
