After taking its first flight on August 29th, 1970, the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 became essential for intercontinental travel, serving as the backbone of many long-haul airline fleets. The trijet, which was intended to succeed the DC-8 for long-range flights, entered commercial service with American Airlines on August 5th, 1971, and was used by several different carriers worldwide throughout its history.
