CMA CGM announces Freightliner acquisition

CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest container shipping line, has announced the acquisition of Freightliner UK Intermodal Logistics.

Financial terms of the deal, expected to close in early 2026, have not yet been disclosed.

According to CMA CGM, the deal will:

  • Strengthen intermodal services in Europe: CMA CGM acquires Freightliner UK Intermodal Logistics, becoming a key player in rail logistics in the United Kingdom.
  • Accelerate decarbonisation: the acquisition supports the modal shift from road to rail, a key lever in reducing CO₂ emissions in supply chains.
  • Creating value-added services: better interfacing rail and maritime expertise to deliver complementary and sustainable logistics solutions to customers.

CMA CGM has recently invested heavily in land and air logistics to be less reliant on a volatile shipping sector. Logistics accounted for around a third of its group sales last year.

Freightliner will remain a multi-user, multi-customer standalone operator while benefitting from CMA CGM’s support and coverage in logistics and shipping globally.

Freightliner UK transports containers between British ports and inland terminals, handling 770,000 containers last year.
