PKP Cargo sells wagons for 29 million euros

One of the measures of PKP Cargo’s restructuring plan entails the sale of around 10,360 wagons that are no longer deemed suitable for operations. The company has now sold 6,696 units for PLN 123.3 million (28,9 million euros).
“The remaining pool of wagons intended for sale will serve as a possible source of spare parts to be used during increased transport in the autumn and winter months”, PKP Cargo said. After that, they will also be put up for sale, as the restructuring plan dictates.

‘Rolling stock reserve will not be affected’

Most of the items are decommissioned coal wagons, which the company claims are in surplus. However, there are also other rolling stock types that are not listed on the European Vehicle Register. “Nearly 10% of the wagon wrecks currently being sold have not been in service for over 10 years”, PKP Cargo explained.

The Polish operator also reassured that this move will not have a negative impact on its reserve pool of wagons. “After the sales plan outlined in the restructuring plan is implemented, the company will continue to have approximately 10,000 decommissioned wagons in its non-working reserve”. These units, the company added, will be refurbished and put back on the tracks.
