The Douglas Aircraft Company designed and developed the DC-9 in the 1960s. This aircraft was developed into the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 in 1979, further developing into the MD-90 in the early 90s. Following Boeing's acquisition of McDonnell Douglas in 1997, the then-latest variant, the MD-95, was marketed as Boeing 717.

US legacy carrier Delta Air Lines has agreed to pay $330 million to acquire a 15% stake in Canadian airline WestJet. This marks the latest development in the SkyTeam member’s ongoing partnership with the airline, which dates back more than 14 years to the start of 2011. Delta hopes that its stake in WestJet will benefit both airlines and their customers in various markets.
