Legacy carriers in the United States, as we have argued on Simple Flying many times, are so heavily reliant on their massive loyalty programs that they are crucial elements of their financial picture at this point. Programs like American’s AAdvantage program, Delta’s SkyMiles program, and United’s MileagePlus program have all become major elements of not just the global commercial aviation landscape but the greater macroeconomy as a whole, something we will get into a bit later in this piece.
