William Boeing founded Boeing in the early 20th century, but to understand how he came to have the financial means, we must look back to his father. William Boeing's father, Wilhelm Böing, emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1868. After initially working as a laborer, he got enough money to purchase timberland and iron ore rights in northeastern Minnesota. From this, he made a fortune, but died from influenza in 1890.
