While there are only three major legacy airlines in the United States, the system works very differently in Europe. While Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and American Airlines dominate the skies in the United States (both in terms of seating capacity and the number of flights on offer), Europe has more than a dozen different legacy carriers. This does not mean, however, that just a few companies are actually pulling the strings.
