Rail freight traffic at the port of Valencia increased by 11.85 per cent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year. This growth increased the modal share of rail at the port to 7.27 per cent. In total, the port of Valencia handled 60,430 TEUs by rail.
One of the main factors behind this increase was the (re)opening of a rolling highway between Valencia and Madrid. Initially launched in July 2024, the service was discontinued until December due to the aftermath of extreme weather conditions which hit the area in Autumn.
In addition to a growth in the rail freight department, the port of Valencia posted a 3.35 per cent rise in containers handled, reaching 1,3 million TEUs. Imports (+19.25 per cent) and exports (+7.32 per cent) both recorded positive figures as well. Roll-on/roll-off traffic also started 2025 well, with a 1.8 per cent increase compared to Q1 in 2024.
