In Europe, train travel has long been seen as a better and sustainable alternative to air travel, something which has continually been rewarded with government subsidies as they attempt to reduce the number of passengers that choose to fly when trains are available as an alternative. Due to the continent (and the European Union) as a whole being relatively environmentally conscious, most passengers will just choose the train over the plane, assuming other variables, such as price and travel time, remain mostly the same.
