Airport runways need regular maintenance and upkeep to keep them running for safe operations. Many major airports have more than one runway, so that when one of them is upgraded, the other can handle the traffic. Something similar will happen at Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport, which will upgrade one of its runways in two phases.
