There are more than a dozen reasons why an airline might choose to operate cargo services, with the largest and most important of which being the opportunity to generate additional revenue by transporting cargo in their holds while passengers sit above on the upper decks. It is extremely complicated for low-cost carriers to factor cargo operations into their overall strategy, and thus the commercial passenger airlines that are also leaders in the cargo space are typically legacy carriers, with extremely limited exceptions.
