In July 2014, Air New Zealand became the launch customer for the Boeing 787-9 when it received the first of 14 Dreamliners now in its fleet. These aircraft are powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines that have not performed as well as expected, leading to aircraft unavailability that is plaguing Air New Zealand to this day.
