UK-based Monarch Airlines had hoped to replace its aging fleet of Airbus A320s and A321s with the brand-new fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, with the carrier having placed orders for 45 737 MAX 8 jets worth approximately $4.8 billion at list price. The airline was aiming to begin taking deliveries of the new narrowbodies in 2018 and continue through to 2022.
