For decades, low-cost carriers have thrived in Europe. They have been protected by pro-competition legislation and by the European judicial system, and they have significantly helped lower the cost of flying for all Europeans. Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, and others have managed to cut costs so dramatically that they can offer tickets at a mere fraction of what legacy airlines would typically force passengers to pay. Furthermore, these airlines have put downward pressure on legacy airlines to lower fares for all passengers in order to compete on the routes they operate.
