Aircraft have at least four types of aircraft (commercial aircraft normally have more) , a major function of these lights is to avoid collisions. The lights that all aircraft must have are landing lights, beacon lights, strobe lights, and position lights (also called navigation lights). Commercial aircraft normally have a bunch more external lights to aid pilots in taking off and landing. External lights on aircraft are normally to illuminate areas that the pilots need to see (both the runway and the aircraft), to make the aircraft more visible to others (including other aircraft), and to provide illumination for other various purposes.
