For decades, Australians endured a duopolistic domestic aviation market, where prices, aircraft, schedules and service quality were pretty much identical, with only the livery on the outside showing any real difference. In a speech today a senior Australian politician has highlighted the importance of airline competition, revealing that when three airlines operate the same route airfares are half the price of when a single carrier serves it.
