FHP Intermodal commits to relaunch rail freight in southern Italy

Italian logistics company FHP Intermodal is on a quest to revive rail freight in the Apulia region, on the country’s southeastern coast. The company is investing €50 million in the Incoronata terminal and has increased journeys between the terminal and Fiorenzuola d’Arda.
The facility is located southeast of Foggia, one of the main cities in the region and is an important hub for northbound traffic. FHP, which is part of Italy’s largest infrastructure fund manager F2i SGR, will invest €50 million to install a new track bundle to handle 750-metres trains. In addition, new warehouses covering 12,000 square metres will be built.

“The works are scheduled for completion at the end of 2027, but work is underway to ensure the warehouses are ready for use in Spring 2027”, FHP said. The handling of longer convoys, however, will also depend on the upgrades along the Adriatic railway, the company added.

Increased frequency

In parallel with the terminal upgrade, FHP has also increased the frequency of its service running from Fiorenzuola d’Arda, located between Milan and Bologna, to the Incoronata terminal. The service is now running five days a week, with an extension all the way to Bari. This is the group’s first service from Fiorenzuola to the east coast, as the existing links connect to Pomezia, Cassino and Nola, all in the southwest.

Taking over Apulia

The Incoronata terminal is not the only hub in the region for FHP. The company is also one of the winners of the tender for the facility in Surbo, near Lecce. This site has been unused since 2009 and abandoned since 2011. After a few failed attempts at reopening it, the terminal has now been sold to Surbo Terminal. This consortium comprises FHP, Gda Group, Carluccio Trasporti and Trasporti Primiceri (the former terminal manager).
