Italian state-owned operator FS Logistix presented its first demo train in the context of Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC). “With Italy’s first DAC demo train, we are bringing a tangible example of European railway innovation to Bologna,” said the company’s CEO Sabrina De Filippis.
The demonstration of DAC operations took place at Interporto Bologna, one of the 10 largest intermodal terminals in Europe. This is the first showcase of the train in preparation for the tests planned in Italy for next year. Six locomotives and 120 wagons will be equipped with the coupler for intermodal services.
Will the skepticism end?
The tests were first announced in June 2024, sparking skeptical reactions from many in the industry, who argued that funds could be better deployed to help the current financial difficulties most operators continue to face. Rail freight volumes in Italy have been going down for a few years now, especially due to capacity restrictions tied to infrastructure works, leaving companies stranded.

On the other hand, there have been significant DAC developments in the past two years. Commercial tests have been completed in Germany, while Rail Cargo Group tasked Knorr-Bremse with equipping 23 wagons and one locomotive to run real commercial operations from 2028. Poland, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Sweden and Norway are also committed to run or already running DAC pilots.
