A new service in Italy will connect the ports of Gioia Tauro and Livorno via rail to boost automotive logistics. The initiative, led by FS Logistix, GTA and Automar, will focus on vehicles coming to Gioia Tauro from the Far East and destined to the Italian and European markets.
The service will be operated by Mercitalia Rail, part of FS Logistix and will link the Automar terminal in Gioia Tauro with the Il Faldo site in Livorno, managed by GTA. An intermediate stop is also planned in Pontecagnano, south of Naples, where Automar operates another facility.
BYD chose Gioia Tauro
The main benefits of this new rail connection are shorter idle times for ships in the Calabrese port as well as contributing to the modal shift from road to rail, Automar pointed out. Gioia Tauro was recently selected by Chinese car manufacturer BYD as their main hub to serve the markets of southern and central Italy. A first ship, loaded with 1,200 vehicles, reached the port last February.
