The Italian state-owned rail freight holding FS Logistix is deploying its so-called ‘smart train’ between Milan and Catania. The wagons running between the two destinations have been equipped with PJM’s WaggonTracker in what is the first large-scale commercial pilot of this initiative.
The system allows the continuous live monitoring of the braking system, load stability and train composition and also includes a derailment detection system. “The launch of this first demo train highlights our commitment to driving change in the sector”, said Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of FS Logistix.
The process of installing WaggonTracker the wagons, used by FS’ intermodal subsidiary Mercitalia Intermodal, started a little over a year ago. Together with Mercitalia Rail, they are now running the smart train on a route over 1,000 kilometres long. In total, the company said that around 700 wagons have been equipped so far.
