Smurfit Westrock puts paper on rail between Germany and Poland

Smurfit Westrock, one of the world’s largest paper and packaging companies, introduced new railway connections between their mill in Hoya to their production sites in Poland. The initiative will remove “more than 1,400 truck journeys each year”, the company said.
VGH collects the paper and then PKP Cargo and Transwaggon take care of rail transportation with 600-metre-long trains. “By increasing the use of rail in our paper and board logistics network, we are improving reliability for customers while significantly reducing emissions”, Saverio Mayer, President and CEO, Europe, MEA & APAC at Smurfit Westrock said.

Smurfit Westrock operates several packaging production sites all across Poland. The main one is in Pruszków, in the eastern outskirts of Warsaw, which was recently expanded to reach a capacity of 500 million boxes annually. The company is the result of the merger between Smurfit Kappa and WestRock in July 2024. The new entity now employs almost 100,000 people in 40 countries and produces 23 million tonnes of paper across 60 mills.
