Contargo, a large European intermodal logistics company, has taken over PortShuttle Rotterdam. The former had long been one of the largest customers of the latter. In November, Contargo had already taken the lead on train management operations, but is now taking over all over PortShuttle’s activities.
Contargo took over PortShuttle Rotterdam as of 1 January 2026. PortShuttle was previously a subsidiary of the Port of Rotterdam. The company plays a leading role in rail transportation in the port. Its activities include train management, slot management and shunting operations.
“The acquisition of PortShuttle strengthens our position in Rotterdam and enables us to accelerate the realisation of our joint ambition for rail transport”, commented Thijs van den Heuvel, COO at Contargo. “We are grateful for the trust that the Port Authority has placed in us and see this as an opportunity to combine our knowledge, network and capacity.”
The purchase of PortShuttle follows Contargo’s takeover of train management operations at PortShuttle Rotterdam on 1 November. It is now expanding its involvement by a full takeover that includes shunting and slot management. “A logical and future-oriented step that safeguards expertise and experience”, the Rotterdam port says.
