Tram renewal works have been progressing at the corner of Victoria and Elizabeth Streets with the project expected to take 2 weeks to complete. These works are in and around the Queen Victoria Market.

The above photos show the works in the early stages where the tracks have been lifted. These images were taken on the corner of Victoria and Elizabeth Sts.
A new “superstop” is being installed for unknown reasons in Victoria Street, a very busy road for vehicles accessing West Melbourne and North Melbourne. The additional super stop will mean there are two super stops at the market with 100M of each other. Some may ask why the need for two stops?
The new super stop is a central platform which will adversely affect parking and also vehicle access to the market.

The above photos were taken on 21 October 2025 and show the works well underway. The track has been replaced with the road having been resurfaced.
These works would not have come cheap, were they really necessary?
One of the key questions that should always be asked is what problem is this investment solving?

Nice photos they have achieved a lot.
Excellent point on the necessity was the project really required?
Cool article highlights very little business case work is undertaken on the investments at the trams. I travel through that area and agree there was no need for a new platform on the northern side of the market. Complete waste of money.
Will only lead to traffic issues.
I think the reason why there is a super stop in Victoria st is because the 57 tram will not be going down Elizabeth st It will be continuing up Victoria st and turning right into Swanston st Therefore enabling passengers coming from West Maribyrnong direction access to Vic Market
That would make some sense but removed the route from Elizabeth street. Wondering what the benefit is to the change for passengers?
That maybe a good reason why they have done the works they have. I saw the works this morning. It is a very small stop they have created with island platform.
