EU approves 47 million euro grants for Polish ERTMS implementation

The European Commission has approved a Polish scheme to install ERTMS Baseline 4 or higher on new or modernised rail vehicles. The programme will run until the end of 2029 and will come in the shape of direct grants to rail companies, both in the freight and passenger sectors.
European money for the scheme will come from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, Environment (FEnIKS) Programme 2021-27, which is financed from the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Funds.

The European Commission considers the money a necessity to help shift goods from the road to rail to greenify transport. The aid will cover up to 85% of eligible costs to implement ERTMS, including the cost of the equipment and the cost of retrofitting.

What is ERTMS?

The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is the EU’s standardised system for managing railway signalling and communications, coordinated by the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA).

It integrates three key components:

1. GSM–R for communication (FRMCS in the future)
2. ETCS for signalling
3. ETML for train/payload management

ERTMS aims to replace national systems with a unified standard to improve safety, efficiency, and cross-border rail interoperability across Europe.
