The railway connecting Baku (Azerbaijan), Tbilisi (Georgia) and Kars (Türkiye) will see a higher number of freight trains coming from China. The railway companies of Azerbaijan and China agreed on increasing the number of block trains along this line to 10 per day.
The line, known as BTK, is a key artery of the Middle Corridor, as it connects the Caspian Sea to Türkiye and thus the rest of Europe. The line was renovated a little over a year ago, providing for a lot more capacity, from one to five million tonnes per year according to official estimates.
The number of block trains has been increasing since the re-opening of the modernised line, and interest seems ot be on the rise. For example, Azerbaijan and China are in talks to launch a service from Lianyungang, on the East China Sea, to Baku. The head of Lianyungang Port, Wang Gui Chao, recently visited Azerbaijan and highlighted how the Chinese port also acts as a link to new markets such as Japan and South Korea.
