The Auckland mayor sees great significance in the first test run of the new underground City Rail Link beneath central Auckland.
Last night, rail inspectors completed five trial journeys for the new trains, marking a positive milestone in Auckland’s rail development, which is set to open next year.
Mayor Wayne Brown says the first three-carry train moved at five kilometers per hour, allowing inspectors to assess its size and the electrical power supply needed to run through the new tunnel.
The rail line stretches nearly four kilometers from Waitematā [formerly Britomart] to Maungawhau [Mount Eden], passing through two new stations, Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-a-Hape.
