European airplane manufacturers began developing larger aircraft from A300 derivatives in the 1970s, which birthed the A330 twinjet and 340 quadjet. These were both designed alongside each other, and first orders began in the late 1980s. The first variant of the Airbus A330 was the A330-300, with Air Inter being the first airline to enter service with the type in January 1994.
