Engine issues with airBaltic’s Airbus A220 fleet has forced the carrier to begin suspending routes and slashing frequencies across its network this summer as it struggles with the lost capacity. “Several” aircraft will be grounded during what is generally considered the peak season for airlines.

Nearly nine years have passed since the Airbus A220 (previously called CSeries) entered commercial service. The A220-100 (CS100) first flew passengers with launch customer SWISS in July 2016. The higher-capacity and more popular A220-300 (CS300), with much better economics, first flew with airBaltic in December 2016.Unlike regional jets, the A220—even the smallest variant—is considered mainline equipment. Yes – the jet is somewhat sized as a larger regional aircraft but its range puts it A little closer to narrowbodies from the 737 and A320 families.
