The events of 9/11 brought many changes to how we travel by air today. One such change across the aviation industry was the use of reinforced cockpit doors with a highly secure locking mechanism. Today, it is common for commercial aircraft to have cockpit doors opened while the aircraft is on the ground and locked for the entirety of the flight.
