VR Logistics transported 12.6 million tonnes in the first half of 2026, down 7.2% year on year. Weak demand from Finnish heavy industry, particularly the forest sector, continued to weigh on rail freight volumes.

The extra capacity is aimed at shippers affected by reduced inland waterway capacity, not at a confirmed traffic shift.

Forest products and anthracite remained the largest traffic groups, while frac sand and rock salt drove the fastest growth.
