The timeline for a reopening has changed throughout time and now, once again, estimates claim that a full reopening won\u2019t be possible until the first quarter of 2025.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-55036\"><\/span>\u201cDespite a strong mobilization of the SNCF and Savoie Department teams, the date of the reopening of the link is not envisaged before the first quarter of 2025, and no longer in the autumn of 2024 as initially planned\u201d, said La Transalpine Lyon-Turin on LinkedIn. Rumours about a possible delayed reopening to 2025 were already circulating in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/infrastructure\/2024\/01\/30\/frejus-railway-reopening-might-be-delayed-even-further\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">January<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"readmore\">\n<div class=\"readmore-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/infrastructure\/2024\/04\/22\/italy-wants-to-prioritise-rail-freight-once-frejus-railway-partially-reopens\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Rixi-Mercintreno-128x128.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"readmore-thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"readmore-info\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/infrastructure\/2024\/04\/22\/italy-wants-to-prioritise-rail-freight-once-frejus-railway-partially-reopens\/\" class=\"readmore-title\">Italy wants to prioritise rail freight once Frejus Railway partially reopens<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>Landslide area is not safe yet<\/h2>\n<p>The main reason behind the shifted timetable is that the operations to purge and secure the cliff of La Praz, where the landslide occurred, are more complicated than expected. The cavities found in the central area of the slope are quite unstable, meaning that additional work is needed to make it safe again. Until this process is complete, it will be impossible to start fixing the infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/corridors\/2023\/08\/28\/traffic-along-frejus-railway-halted-after-a-landslide\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">The landslide<\/a>, the largest in the area in 45 years, occurred on 27 August 2023 in Saint-Andr\u00e9 \u00e0 La Praz, near the French-Italian border. The railway running in the area is part of the main connection between Italy and France, running through the Bardonecchia-Modane border crossing. It needs to be mentioned that the situation could have been even worse. For example, the landslide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/infrastructure\/2024\/06\/27\/the-landslide-in-france-last-summer-did-not-damage-the-rail-tunnel\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">did not damage the rail tunnel<\/a> near the location of the landslide, called Tunnel de la Br\u00e8che.
