These layoffs are to be added to the 453 jobs to be axed as a result of the company\u2019s discontinuity plan implemented by the French government to avoid heavy sanctions from the European Union. The 73 redundancies in question will also be accompanied by the creation of 11 new posts.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-54818\"><\/span>Commenting on the fresh round of job cuts, a spokesperson for Rail Logistics Europe (RLE), the umbrella structure of SNCF Group\u2019s rail freight and logistics operations, told RailFreight.com: \u201cIn addition to the discontinuity to be carried out by Fret SNCF, a performance plan was already underway at the company with the aim of optimising processes, reducing structural costs and improving its competitiveness on the market. These are on top of the job cuts linked to the discontinuity.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"readmore\">\n<div class=\"readmore-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2024\/06\/04\/ulysse-fret-is-france-on-the-right-track-to-drive-rail-freight-growth\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/shutterstock_1358016626-128x128.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"readmore-thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"readmore-info\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2024\/06\/04\/ulysse-fret-is-france-on-the-right-track-to-drive-rail-freight-growth\/\" class=\"readmore-title\">Ulysse Fret: Is France on the right track to drive rail freight growth?<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>The future of Fret SNCF<\/h2>\n<p>As a consequence of its discontinuity, Fret SNCF will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/business\/2023\/07\/27\/fret-sncf-to-be-divided-into-two-new-companies-from-2025\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">divided into two new entities<\/a> at the end of this year: New Fret, which will retain 80 per cent of Fret SNCF\u2019s operations, and New Maintenance, which will pick up maintenance activities. New Fret will be headed by the current CEO of Fret SNCF, Charles Puech d\u2019Alissac, the RLE spokesperson confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are restrictions on its scope of activity as under the discontinuity plan it will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/policy\/2023\/09\/28\/fret-sncf-banned-from-combined-transport-services-for-10-years\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">prohibited<\/a> from operating regular block trains and combined transport for 10 years. Earlier this year, it emerged that 15 of the 20 or so traffic routes that Fret SNCF has been forced to relinquish under the plan have been taken on by competitors, including six by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/policy\/2024\/02\/14\/db-cargo-main-beneficiary-of-fret-sncf-discontinuity\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">DB Cargo France<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the second round of French parliamentary elections earlier this month saw the left-leaning Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP) become the biggest group in the French Assembly with policies that appear to include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2024\/07\/08\/could-frances-new-biggest-parliamentary-group-abandon-liquidation-of-fret-sncf\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">abandonment of the liquidation of Fret SNCF<\/a>.
