{"id":919,"date":"2023-03-06T08:25:35","date_gmt":"2023-03-05T22:25:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?guid=d0002aef46389cf3acdb312dcb27c728"},"modified":"2023-03-06T08:25:35","modified_gmt":"2023-03-05T22:25:35","slug":"report-concludes-half-price-fares-not-enough-to-lure-more-public-transport-users","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=919","title":{"rendered":"Report concludes half-price fares not enough to lure more public transport users"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Half-price fares are not enough to encourage more people onto public transport, according to a report by Waka Kotahi New zealand Transport Agency.<\/p>\n<p>The report,\u00a0*Impact of Half-Price Public Transport Fares &#8211; A Research Note*, published in February 2022, showed bus patronage in Wellington and Christchurch matched 2019 rates, but largely remained below pre-Covid-19 levels even since the introduction of half price fares.<\/p>\n<p>On Auckland trains, patronage had not yet rebounded to pre-Covid-19 levels in 2019, or during the same period in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>People who already relied on public transport, like city-dwellers, people with disabilities, and those without cars, were benefiting from cheaper fares by saving money and choosing to travel more often.<\/p>\n<p>But for others, low fares were not enough to make the switch &#8211; even if it meant the journey would cost less than taking the car.<\/p>\n<p>Many considered the bus an \u201cunrealistic alternative\u201d, as it was not close by or the journey would take too long.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Half-price fares are not enough to encourage more people onto public transport, according to a report by Waka Kotahi New zealand Transport Agency.
